Since it looks like the talk section of the forum has fallen largely under the sway of FO's Tea-Birchers/Birthers/Baggers, then stuff like this just doesn't get posted so much anymore. So here you go. The 3 articles overlap somewhat, but are all worth reading in their own right. I've included an excerpt from each, below its respective link:

http://www.alternet.org/teaparty/15...s_right_to_kill_public_education/?page=entire

"The decades-long campaign to end public education is propelled by the super-wealthy, right-wing DeVos family. Betsy Prince DeVos is the sister of Erik Prince, founder of the notorious private military contractor Blackwater USA (now Xe), and wife of Dick DeVos, son of the co-founder of Amway, the multi-tiered home products business.

By now, you've surely heard of the Koch brothers, whose behind-the-scenes financing of right-wing causes has been widely documented in the past year. The DeVoses have remained largely under the radar, despite the fact that their stealth assault on America's schools has the potential to do away with public education as we know it."

http://www.alternet.org/teaparty/15...op's_assault_on_the_middle_class/?page=entire

"In January, a small group of Indiana schoolteachers encountered their governor, Mitch Daniels, in a hallway of the state capitol. They were part of an outpouring of Hoosiers who had come to Indianapolis that day to protest Daniels' almost-gleeful political attack on the pay and even the worthiness of public employees. Having the chance, this scrappy group dared to confront his eminence. Why, they asked, was he demonizing and so drastically under-cutting those who educate Indiana's children?

"You teachers are all making too much money," the governor snapped. He then lectured them with a prepackaged factoid: "You are all making 22 percent more than the taxpayers who are paying your salaries."

Hmmm, too much? Let's see--classroom teachers in Indiana earn a middle-class paycheck that averages $47,255 a year for handling a daily workload that would break the back (and haughtiness) of any pompous and pampered governor. Yet they are being belittled and their compensation is being slashed by this peacock of a public employee who sucks up more than twice what teachers get in annual salary, plus gold-plated benefits, assorted perks of office, and a barn full of personal staffers to help him make it through his day. Someone needs to buy Mitch a mirror.

Daniels is one of a flock of far right-wing governors who seem to have flown out of the same dark political hellhole in the past couple of years. Now ruling from the highest roosts of power in more than a dozen states, all of them are pushing vituperative measures designed to disempower and downsize not only public employees and unions, but also the entire workaday majority of their states --the middle class itself. Among other assaults, they are canceling collective bargaining contracts, suppressing union rights, arbitrarily eliminating hundreds of thousands of both public and private-sector jobs, turning over schools and other public functions to low-paying corporations, doing away with minimum wage protections, and cutting unemployment benefits and worker pensions (while simultaneously giving new tax cuts to corporations and millionaires)."

http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2011/05/21/168363/billionaires-privatize-education/

"The Walton Family Foundation (WFF):The Wal Mart-backed WFF is one of the most powerful foundations in the country, having made investments in 2009 totaling over $378 million. In addition to financing a number of privately-managed charter schools itself, the foundation showered ASC with millions of dollars in 2009. It also gave over a million dollars to the New York-based Brighter Choice Foundation, half a million dollars to the Florida School Choice Fund, $105,000 to the Foundation for Educational Choice, $774,512 to the Friends of Educational Choice, $400,000 to School Choice Ohio, and gave $50,000 to the Piton Foundation to promote a media campaign around the Colorado School Choice website — all in 2009 alone. WFF’s push for expanding private school education and undermining traditional public schools was best summed up by John Walton’s words in an interview in 2000. An interviewer asked him, “Do you think there’s money to be made in education?” Walton replied, “Absolutely. I think it will offer a reasonable return for investors.” (He also did vigorously argue in the same interview that he does not want to abolish public education)."

Re: Meet the Billionaires Working w/ the Religious Right-Wing to Eliminate Public Sch

You know, this article has helped something come together for me.
As we all know, the Tea Party was formed as a cry against taxation, as they claim, akin to that of the original Boston Tea Party. "Taxation without representation" and all that jazz.
What they seem to conveniently leave out of this cry is that the Boston Tea Party was not just against the Monarchy, but against the monopolization of the tea industry by the East India Company - almost a protest of the marriage between government and taxation and corporation.
Fast forward to our modern Tea Party. Look at the leaders of this group. The Koch brothers. The Waltons. The DeVos. Corporations - and at least one in particular (Walmart) that has worked quite aggressively towards its own monopolization. Groups working as puppet masters to an unsuspecting group of the poor masses. Yes, I am sure the mouth pieces such as Glenn, Rush, Newt, Michelle, Sarah, Rick, etc. are quite aware of them - but common Joe Republican nor Tea Party has absolutely no idea, And every once in a while, these guys find a diamond like Paul who might actually be against smaller government and can rally up the crazies in the troops enough to aide them - but a guy small enough that, once his use is up, they can sweep him under the rug - even if it comes to the point of sending one of their thugs to manhandle him during a debate to make sure he does not get too out of line.
Meanwhile, the puppet masters spend as much as they can to ensure themselves much larger slices of the pies, and to make sure the masses are kept in line, every once in a while fed a scrap to keep them satisfied (re: the Bush "stimulus" checks). But, as they continue to destroy the public school system, public safety organizations, any program aimed at ensuring any semblance of success for the lower or middle classes, health, programs for the elderly, and any thread of satisfaction in the work place (let alone unionization) - they find themselves with allies in the political field who have no interest in those of lesser financial rankings than themselves.
Because, remember - it is much easier to control a bunch of ignorant poor schmucks than it is to control an educated middle class.

I have to wonder about the motives, intellect and sanity of anyone who opposes public education.

Well if you think that the public education is really the best then you are mistaken. Quality of teachers between the top notch schools like MIT or Georgetown or Harvard business and law school as compared to some public school is night and day. Of course a good college is also what makes the difference for someone who wants to be a high achiever. A lot of people who live in poor suburbs can't go to better college or universities because they don't have the necessary level to have good marks there or are illiterate. A good education isn't free. Even in France, the public schools and universities which used to be excellent 12 years ago are now becoming uppercrap filled with shitty unexperienced young teachers and ghetto trash people from the shitty neighbourhoods. The notion of merit, abnegation and sacrifice, you don't seem to know them, but let me remind you one good thing, none owes you a damn thing. If you want something then work and bust your ass off, and don't be lazy.

The article didn't mention university education. It was actually about kindergarten to high school public schools. A six year old can't exactly "Bust his ass" to pay off a private education, can he?

Well...maybe some people will eventually want that. A lot of people don't have problems using child labor now.
