In the US, soccer will never be as big as the NFL. I don't know why the American media feeds this fire. I think part of the argument is to keep the NFL on people's minds. I do think the NFL will lose some of its popularity over the next few years. It has peaked. The Super Bowl will still draw big numbers but regular season numbers will drop a little. Soccer is not going to replace anything. It is carving its niche in the American sports market and doing a good job. As football, baseball and basketball games begin to take 4 hours to play, fans are going to be attracted to a 2-hour soccer match. Soccer-specific stadiums now being built in the US are in the 15,000 - 30000 seat range. The more intimate setting will create a better atmosphere. NFL is all about its image and the money. Fans like me, though in the minority, are finding other ways to spend our time and money. I refuse to pay for an NFL ticket. The last game I went to was miserable because it was steaming hot and there was so much down time for TV commercials. I paid to watch the game, why not cater to me, the fan in attendance? Oh yeah, that's right, my $80 is piddlyshit. The NFL doesn't need anyone to show up, but you can be damn sure they will do all they can to prevent an empty section of a stadium to be shown during the broadcast.
