i think # 1 is overrated.....a great film but there were better war movies that were lower on the list....the first 20 min makes that movie...and honestly the rest is only good....its like the climax was 20 minutes in....

I agree 100%.

The best war films are the ones filmed by correspondants that show what war is really like. And movies that you come out of and you feel like enlisting...well, then they clearly did not tell an honest tale. IMO.

Band of Brothers tops the list.

True It wasn't a two hour film, it was a it was a cable series but it was definately the best portrayal of war ever depicted.
Bingo

stupid movie. i red the book before watchin that film. and i was disapointed.

For a book that was written in 1954, I thought it was exceptional!!! The Movie however, was a let down....

Some great movies there, but my favorite is not listed.....

It is called "The Odd Angry Shot". Its about the Australian special Air Service in Vietnam.....

whats the name of the film about an russian sniper-1337-progamer ;pthat was a good film, also black hawk down or saving private ryan.

Enemy at the Gates. Good story line, great cast and ruined by a background love story....

I personally vote for "The Deer Hunter" or "Apoc Now Redux - The directors cut" really fills out the movie, even seem shorter for some reason!

That was "Enemy At The Gates" with Jude Law, Ed Harris and the lovely Rachel Weiss. Brilliant film.

yep, "Saving Private Ryan" is nice but too much Hollywodian. I prefer "Full Meal jacket" or Apocalypse now! But my heart comes back to "The fine red line", this movie is terrible: huge casting, gorgeous photography, deep story. It is more a movie about how each man lives her war: not a movie about war of men but men on war! Subtile no? ;-)

My top 10 would be:

1. Band of Brothers (not strictly a cinema film, but the best portrayal of the European Theatre of Operations ever. It'll never be bettered, although I just wish that Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg had at least PRETENDED that us Brits played a rather more significant part in winning the conflict.)
2. Saving Private Ryan
3. Blackhawk Down
4. Full Metal Jacket
5. Enemy At The Gates
6. Cross Of Iron
7. Paths of Glory
8. Waterloo (Historical epic I know, but a war film all the same)
9. Platoon
10. The Great Escape

That's my tuppence (or five cents) worth.

Saving Private Ryan at No. 1......my fucking arse !

Clearly voted for by numpties

Yo Mr Miyagi,

What the fuck's a "Numptie"? Whatever it is it's priceless and I shall be calling people who piss me off "numpties" for some time to come!

Thanks for that! :rofl2:

Mike

The list has some really strange decisions on it.

Patton is ONLY #44?

The Battle of Algiers is ONLY #64?

All Quiet on the Western Front deserves much higher than #33. For a movie 76 years old, it still packs an emotional wallop. Add to that the fact that it basically created war movie cinematography.

Troy is on the list? That movie is a joke.

I'd have to go for Hell in The Pacific, with Lee Marvin and Toshirô Mifune as an american and a japanese pilot on an island together. They're the only 2 characters in the entire film. They're still fighting each other even though they should be fighting to survive on this remote island. Its brilliant.

1 apocalypse now
2 schindler's list
3 full metal jacket
4 bridge on the river kwai
5 the deer hunter
6 braveheart
7 platoon
8 saving private ryan
9 the dam busters
10 dr strangelove
