The man once dubbed “the most hated man on the internet” by Rolling Stone has been jailed for two and a half years for being the brains behind one of the most prominent revenge porn sites to have come into being.
The sentence handed down to Hunter Moore, according to the BBC, will also supplemented by a $2,000 fine and a three year supervision order when he is released.
However, the sentence has been criticised by former victims and commentators as far too lenient, and there has been criticism that US laws do not still treat revenge porn as a separate and specific crime.
Perhaps the most laughable part of this sentence is that he will have to pay his victims each $145.70 in compensation. I’m sure that will just make them feel so much better about the devastation this man has caused in their lives.
While the punishment continues to be so pathetically lenient for these crimes, people will continue to be reluctant to step forward to report them. This was a missed opportunity from the US legal system.
