i've met a lot of dancers on their off time. just like any group, you got your entire mix in the gamut.

some were idiots, some were drug addicts, some were just party animals, and some had their shit together and were really great people.

on their topic, some bums can be a bit scary, depending on where you live. of course, again, the whole gamut. you've prolly passed through the same group i occasionally do, jane. there's this bum corner out in phx, i hate passing through. some of them get pretty aggressive. if you dont got your street smarts about you, it can be intimidating. phx is a bad area, you gotta watch your shit.

i have to go to the east side sometimes and its not fun.

but yeah. i see what you're saying.

I was disgusted at the comments. Sure some homeless people can be scary but many are just down on their luck and need some help. To imply they are all drug addicts is what pissed me off. I think some of those ladies need to get their head out of their asses and check out the real world. Many people live paycheck to paycheck and could be homeless tomorrow.

If someone has never seen the homeless people it can be a shock.

I've never seen anyone homeless and if saw someone sleeping on the footpath I would think that the person is at least crazy.

But I understand your point and yes homeless people are also children of God.

Jane, I get what you're saying, but having volunteered in a homeless shelter, I have some perspective on this.

The homeless people that you see usually really are the ones that you don't want to give money to. They usually are the ones with drug or booze problems, or that simply do not want help and don't want to try to get off the street.

Most of the homeless aren't begging. They're in shelters, or cars.

There are plenty of resources to help homeless people. I've seen them and been part of them. There is a highly visible but small percentage of the homeless population that simply don't want to take advantage of these resources because there are rules around them; like curfews, schedules, restrictions on behaviors, etc.

I never ever give money to healthy homeless people. I do, however, donate time and money to a specific charity in my city that helps them. The one I speak of provides beds, food, clothes, job search help, counseling, transportation, phones, internet, and other services to help them.

If you really want to help the homeless, don't give a dollar to some guy with a sign. Give it to a shelter. You're really only helping to perpetuate a problem by giving a guy a buck.

When I was in college, I gave a homeless man $5. I was a bit buzzed so I started chatting with him and he said he would do anything for another chance, he had been in jail. I gave him my phone number and said I could help him turn his life around...yes I was drunk...and at the time, I was on summer break so I was staying with my parents. Before cell phones. So that's the number I gave him. About 5 months later, after I had long forgotten the incident, I got a call from my dad. He got a call from the manager of a diner and said that a man came in for a dish washing job. He got irate when he learned that there wasn't a job and gave him a number and said to call his sister when they were going to call the cops on him. That number was obviously the one I gave him! My parents were pissed to say the least!

When I lived in California, I got Subway sandwiches for myself and my boyfriend. I had already bought the sub when he called and said he'd already eaten and didn't want it. So I was happy to offer it to a homeless woman in the parking lot, she asked what was on it. I told her it was a turkey sub and she replied, " I'm a strict vegetarian so I don't want that. " She didn't even say thank you.

This is what I think of when someone mentions homeless people. Yes, I'm a horrible person, but it makes me giggle...

I never give money to homeless people, but I used to give them food if I had any on me. Sandwiches, soda, fruit, lunch meat, beer, whatever I had that I didn't REALLY need at the time I would give to the homeless. The last time I gave someone something I had a brand new loaf of bread that I'd gotten from work the night before. I saw a guy asking for money at a stop light, and I gave it to him. He took the loaf with a sour look on his face, sarcastically thanked me, turned around and started throwing the bread to the pigeons. Gawd, that pissed me off! After that incident I noticed that many of them do the exact same kind of thing when people take pity on them and give them food. So, fuck them. They say they want help, yet when someone does something for them they make it seem like you just insulted them and throw it away.

I'm sorry some of you had bad experiences. Yes, there are asshole homeless people but there are also good homeless people. I was lucky enough to go to Catholic schools and worked with the homeless a lot. I've volunteered as long as I can remember and I have seen many people that were good, honest people down on their luck. A friend of mine met a homeless man recently that was 78 years old. He had a wife that was sick with cancer and after she died he had mounting debt from medical bills. He lost everything and now sleeps under a bridge. He didn't want money or food or beer. He just wanted someone to talk to, he said people act like he is invisible. I find that very damn sad. :(

Many people are living paycheck to paycheck so anyone can become homeless.
