I don't know...in Nixon's day, the idea of country over party still existed and Democrats controlled Congress (and principled Republicans were still two words you could say without choking). Today's Republicans gleefully shit on democratic norms in their power grabs with propaganda-gobbling useful idiots happy to support them, and spineless, often-equally-corrupt Democrats who'd rather lose to a wannabe autocrat than elect someone progressive, because that means they get to keep riding the gravy train.
If there is a smoking gun - what the GOP does with that will show everyone the true value of the institutions of the USA. Here's to hoping they make the correct choice - it's not like they can't get almost everything they want from Pence, and the world can sigh in relief that a manchild no longer has control of the world's largest nuclear arsenal.
