Like all conflicts, WW2 was mainly motivated by greed and hate. For some, war is an opportunity to steal art, money, property, etc...
There are still countless pieces of art, and vast amounts of money that was stolen by the Nazis and other assholes, that will never be recovered.

The guy who stole them was an admirer of the third reich and I am pretty sure that some artworks which have never been recovered went to South American countries were the remaining nazis and their sympathizers were and are still living. Same with watches, rings and necklaces which have been stolen and which were never given back to whom they really belong.
